Sustainable production intensification (SCPI) of horticulture crop-based systems

FAO is pleased to invite you to an online discussion forum on sustainable crop production intensification of horticulture-based systems (mainly fruits, vegetables, roots and tubers).

There is growing consensus around the fact that in the future, crop production intensification will need to be built on farming systems that allow to produce more from the same area of land while conserving resources and reducing impacts on the environment. FAO recently released the “Save and Grow” guidebooks, accessible on: http://www.fao.org/ag/save-and-grow/index_en.html, providing a toolkit of adaptable farming systems, technologies, practices and exploring policies and institutional arrangements that can foster sustainable production intensification. These guides illustrate how the adoption of innovative and ecosystem-based approaches like Conservation Agriculture, Integrated Pest Management, Good Agricultural Practices, Integrated Crop Management and Organic Farming can contribute to the sustainable intensification of agricultural production.

Ecosystem-based approaches to sustainable crop production intensification are likely to gain more and more importance in horticulture as well. With this discussion group, we want to encourage scientists and practitioners worldwide to share their motivations for adopting innovative approaches, their experiences with sustainable horticulture production, and to discuss limitations and challenges encountered.
