The study will be undertaken by using the VCA4D methodology, as described in the ‘Methodological Brief. Tools and Methods’. https://europa.eu/capacity4dev/value-chain-analysis-for-development-vca4d-/documents/methodological-brief-v12

Context:

Groundnuts production is important for the domestic market and for households’ food security and it is attracting increasing investments especially in the Upper West and Northern Region of Ghana. The VCA study is demanded by the EU and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to improve the understanding of the functioning of the VC and to provide a baseline against which to measure future changes in the groundnuts production.

In this context, since 2017 the EU has been supporting the MOAP-  Market Oriented Agriculture Programme with a co-funding of 20 MEUR and with a duration of 7 years. The programme, implemented by the MoFA and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, aims at creating new jobs, increase productivity, enhance product quality and preserve the environment in the agricultural sector, targeting mainly small-holder farmers. The MOAP provides more specifically policy advice to decision-makers and trains agricultural advisors to improve the competitiveness of the value chains (VC) for groundnuts, soybeans, mango, pineapple, citrus fruits, cashew, vegetables, rice and sorghum.
