Context
Ecuador became the cocoa third largest exporter in the world, with a production of around 320,000 tonnes per year, grown on over 500,000 hectares by over 120,000 households (mostly small producers on plots of 4ha on average). In 2018 the cocoa industry generated around 800 million dollars in exports. The country’s market position in cocoa is to build up on the child labour free and zero deforestation aspects. The aromatic profile of its cocoa is interesting for cholate maker and cocoa is beginning to be transformed in country.
The government of Ecuador considers cacao as one of the main drivers for poverty reduction and the realization of the sustainable development goals by 2030. This is reflected in the recently approved ‘Plan to Improve the Competitiveness (PIC) of the Production Chain of Cocoa and its by-products’, whose objective is to produce, by 2030, 40% of sustainable cocoa (regular cocoa that is completely traceable and certified), 40% of premium cocoa (cocoa characterised by superb aromatic profiles) and 20% of cocoa converted into semi-finished products and chocolate.
The EUD and Ecuador asked this study to have a clear evidenced based overview of the sector in support of the effective implementation of the national strategy on cocoa.
