Tools and Methods’. https://europa.eu/capacity4dev/value-chain-analysis-for-development-vca4d-/documents/methodological-brief-v12

Please send the CVs of candidates to sara.baumgart@agrinatura-eu.eu and giorgia.mei@agrinatura-eu.eu , by Friday, 13st September, COB.

Context

Around 250.000 t of dates are produced yearly in the oases of Tunisia by some 60.000 producers, in particular in the South of the country. Almost half of this production is exported (the EU being the main destination) and the Tunisian dates offer good quality for niche markets. After olive oil, it is the second most important product for exports. Other than producers, the date value chain offers jobs for collectors, workers in packaging houses and exporters. Collectors, in particular, play a pivotal role in this VC.

To improve its position in international markets, efforts in Tunisia are being made to improve certification and traceability of products to be in line with international standards. With yields below the world average, the country’s levels of productions could also be improved, while guaranteeing the good management of natural resources.

The EU is in the process of negotiating a budget support programme on rural development in Tunisia. The VCA4D study will therefore not only provide an overview on the sustainability and inclusiveness of the date value chain that will serve as a basis for policy dialogue. It could also be used more generally as an example of how the VCA4D methodology could be relevant for calculating and monitoring indicators in other value chains.
