FAO, in collaboration with IFAD and WFP, will be hosting a virtual event to close the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” Campaign. The event will raise awareness of the persistence of gender-based violence (GBV) and the implications for food security.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent conflicts and humanitarian crises there has been an increase in GBV around the world. While the true prevalence of GBV is hard to estimate, its detrimental impacts on food security and nutrition are well known. In turn, the perpetuation of GBV has been associated with food insecurity and poverty. It is crucial in this time of global crises to break this vicious circle and address the root causes of GBV, in order to ensure a more just world for women, men, boys, and girls. Agricultural, food security and nutrition programmes can support initiatives that prevent and mitigate GBV.

In line with this year’s theme for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign – ‘Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now!’ the Rome-based Agencies make a plea to take action to prevent and mitigate GBV now.

Interpretation will be available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish
