Agrinatura advocates that research for development become an inalienable component of the European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy in the Green Deal and the upcoming Framework of Research and Innovation Horizon Europe.

Agrinatura applauds the recently-presented roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities. Agrinatura also welcomes the strong wish to implement the Agenda 2030, pointing to all dimensions of sustainability and development, with a special emphasis on social justice. Yet the Farm to Fork Strategy shows that agri-food systems need to change. “Agrinatura encourages the EC to have a proactive role in including a global perspective on the green deal,” says the president of Agrinatura Dr. Carolyn Glynn. “Fresh water, clean air, biodiversity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions are priorities for all. Low-income countries are severely affected by global warming and in the struggle to provide healthy food for their rapidly growing populations. These problems must be tackled with international solidarity”.

As the communication rightly points out, research and innovation are keys to achieve change. A true leap forward demands knowledge and implementation of solid solutions. The EC is a strong and reliable partner to countries outside Europe. Agrinatura encourages the EC to continue to be a force that aligns research policies for sustainable pathways for green deals throughout the world. Agricultural research for development needs to be a strong pillar in the upcoming Horizon Europe program.
